The fourth generation in charge
Since The end of 2008, the company has been run by the fourth generation of the Smits family. Carolien Smits is responsible for transport planning, Sandra Smits is financially responsible, and Willem Smits is responsible for logistics. This way, the family ensures that each field of expertise is covered within the company, and the distinctive strong family business is evident in every department.
History
The origin of Smits Transport & Logistiek lies in horticulture. In 1939, ten years after its start, production had grown enough to also sell their own vegetables. Another then years later, The Smits family started a wholesale business in potatoes, vegetables, and fruit. The 1970s brought significant growth. 1974, Groothandel Gebr. Smits B.V. was founded, with a supermarket organization as its main customer. The very next year, the building was expanded by 1,000 m2.
Our development
into a transport & logistics company
In the first decades, the Smits brothers only transported products from their own wholesale business. In 1990, a new building of 4,500 m2 was completed, and in 1994 Gebr. Smits B.V. was founded to also provide transport services for third parties. Thus, the focus increasingly shifted to transport and logistics. However, it was not until 2008 that it was decided to completely discontinue the trading activities in potatoes, vegetables and fruit. Now, Smits Transport & Logistiek is a pure transport specialist and logistics service provider with extensive experience in food transportation. In 2019, a production department was established where products can be processed according to the customer’s wishes. In 2020, we expanded our building with an additional 2,000 m2 of storage, doubling our capacity.
